Business Studies

Our department provides GCSE for Key Stage 4 and an L3 qualification for Key Stage 5. The department works closely with local businesses and the Educational Business Partnership to bring learning to life.

Key Stage 4

Students interested in the world of business will enjoy this GCSE subject. During the course they will investigate actual businesses and gain an understanding of business finance. This is and ‘Applied’ Business course because students use their learning to understand the businesses investigated. This includes:

• learning about and understanding the world of business
• developing skills in the financial aspects of business
• carrying out research, both within and away from the classroom
• learning how to work in a team with other members of the class
• learning through investigation in addition to listening and reading.
There are two units.  The first is an investigation into what business enterprise is all about, including how businesses are organised and how people are involved. This unit also looks at new issues such as ‘ethical’ and ‘green’ business. Students focus on one local and one national or international business.  In the second unit we look at how businesses record financial transactions, make payments and keep records of how they are doing. Students learn about balance sheets, profit and loss accounts and how to use these to understand business performance in a practical context.
