Key stage 4

Level 1 / 2 Award in Health and Social Care

In Year 10 students will study the following units:

Unit 6: The Impact of Nutrition on Health and Wellbeing.  This unit provides students with an understanding of the importance of a balanced diet to health and wellbeing.  We explore the concept and components of a balanced diet, the impact of an unbalanced diet and how a variety of socio-economic factors influence our dietary needs.  Students are involved in a project to analyse and improve the diet of someone they know.  This unit is assessed through coursework

Unit 5: Promoting Health and Wellbeing.  This unit explores some of the reasons why health promotion activities are carried out, and the benefits of health promotion for both individuals and the nation as a whole.  Students will research a variety of different types of health promotion, analyse them and create their own.  This unit is assessed through coursework

In Year 11 students will study the following units:

Unit 1: Human Lifespan Development.  This unit provides an understanding of how we develop physically, intellectually, socially and emotionally throughout the human lifespan.  We look at a variety of factors affecting development and the support available to deal with these.  This unit is assessed through paper-based exam.

Unit 2: Health and Social Care Values.  In this unit students will investigate methods used to empower individual users of health and social care services and the importance of taking individual circumstances into account when planning care.  This unit is assessed through coursework.

 

Key stage 5

Level 3 National Diploma in Health and Social Care

This course is a combination of BTEC assignments (coursework) and paper-based exams

Over the two year course students will study the following subjects:

Unit 1: Human Lifespan Development

Unit 2: Working in Health and Social Care

Unit 4: Enquiries into Current Research in Health and Social Care

Unit 5: Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs

Unit 7: Principles of Safe Practice in Health and Social Care

Unit 8: Promoting Public Health

Unit 19: Nutritional Health

 

As part of the Level 3 course, students are expected to participate in a Pre-Employment Placement with the Educational Business Partnership.  This involves 2 weeks of experience working in a variety of different health and social care settings and working with health and social care professionals.  This is a fantastic opportunity for students to develop skills, qualifications and knowledge of many key aspects of working within health and social care.
